What changed
State veteran benefits move all year: legislatures pass new exemptions, agencies change dollar figures, forms get replaced. We recheck every state on a rolling cycle, and this page is the dated log of every substantive update to our state pages, newest first, each with its official source. Corrections to our own pages are listed too; we would rather show our work than pretend the site was always right.

August 2026
- Aug 27 · Maine · income tax
Added a caveat that Maine's non-military pension income deduction ($48,216/person for TY2025) now phases out for higher earners starting tax year 2025, while confirming the separate military-retirement-pay exemption remains uncapped and unaffected. (official source) - Aug 27 · Kansas · other benefits
Added a previously-undocumented, currently-effective benefit: a homeless veteran can get a no-charge Kansas non-driver ID card without meeting the standard address/proof-of-residency requirement, using a discharge document filed with KOVS; also noted Kansas's official Purple Heart State/Purple Heart Day designation. (official source) - Aug 26 · Indiana · property tax
Added a previously-undocumented eligibility fact: a surviving spouse who inherits the full 100% property-tax deduction loses eligibility upon remarriage. (official source) - Aug 26 · Indiana · property tax
Added the specific wartime-period date ranges (WWII/Korea/Vietnam/Gulf War) that qualify a veteran for the $24,960 property-tax deduction, previously referenced but never defined on the page. (official source) - Aug 26 · Indiana · other benefits
Corrected a likely-stale claim that a surviving spouse's burial at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery requires an opening-and-closing fee -- IDVA's current page no longer lists any spouse-specific charge (moderate confidence; readers told to confirm with the cemetery). (official source) - Aug 26 · Indiana · other benefits
Fixed a citation error: the CVSO-must-be-accredited-after-6/30/2026 requirement is Senate Enrolled Act 433 (2025), not House Enrolled Act 1343 (2026) as previously cited; the $1,000 county burial allowance is a pre-existing statute (IC 10-17-10-1) unrelated to either bill. (official source) - Aug 26 · Florida · education
Added a previously-missing, currently-effective benefit: Fla. Stat. 295.011 waives the gap between a 100% P&T veteran's Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit and full tuition/fees at state universities, Florida College System institutions, and career/technical centers. (official source) - Aug 26 · Florida · other benefits
Added the Veterans Dental Care Grant Program (295.157/F.A.C. 55-15.003): free/reduced dental care up to 400% FPL for veterans rated less than 100% service-connected disabled (100%-rated veterans are excluded and already have VA dental eligibility). (official source) - Aug 26 · Florida · vehicles & recreation
Added a forward note: starting October 1, 2026 (Chapter 2026-39, Sec. 10), a disabled veteran may keep their DV plate's unique alphanumeric designation across reissuance, renewal, or transfer to another vehicle. (official source) - Aug 26 · Florida · employment & hiring
Corrected a sourcing error: the disabled-veteran hiring-preference category (Fla. Stat. 295.08) adds 20 points to exam scores, not the 15 points previously stated in the comparison table. (official source) - Aug 26 · Connecticut · education
Added two previously-undocumented, currently-effective benefits from Public Act 25-95 (eff. 7/1/2025): a 100% tuition waiver at Charter Oak State College for wartime veterans/Guard members, and a requirement that 'extension fees' for summer/winter/intersession courses at community colleges, CSU, and UConn be waived for qualifying veterans (school-published guidance still lags the statute -- flagged on the page). (official source) - Aug 26 · Connecticut · other benefits
Added a previously-undocumented, currently-effective benefit: since 7/1/2025 (Public Act 25-95), DSS must disregard a veteran's or surviving spouse's VA non-service-connected pension, Aid and Attendance, and Housebound benefits when determining income eligibility for HUSKY, Medicare Savings, energy assistance, TFA, and other state assistance programs. (official source) - Aug 24 · Arkansas · property tax
Added a previously-undocumented, currently-effective fact: the property-tax homestead exemption covers up to 160 acres of contiguous land (raised from 40 acres by 2025 Act 407), and a county that later finds an exemption was granted erroneously can bill up to 3 years of back taxes plus penalties/interest (2025 Act 876). (official source) - Aug 23 · Illinois · employment & hiring
State employees who are veterans get 4 days/year of paid leave for VA-authorized medical care (any provider, exam or treatment) for a service-connected condition, not charged against sick leave -- newly documented, previously absent from the page and comparison table. (official source) - Aug 22 · New York · education
Added a previously entirely-missing benefit: NYS Regents Awards for Children of Deceased and Disabled Veterans, up to $450/year, for a child of a veteran with a 40%+ service-connected disability (or KIA/MIA/POW). (official source) - Aug 22 · Maryland · employment & hiring
Added DBM's Certified Disabled Veteran non-competitive appointment threshold (30%+ VA-rated service-connected disability) to the hiring section; the page previously named the pathway with no rating threshold at all. (official source) - Aug 22 · Maryland · health & veterans homes
Added Charlotte Hall Veterans Home's VA per-diem rule: veterans rated 70%+ service-connected get the full cost of skilled nursing care paid by the VA. (official source) - Aug 22 · Louisiana · income tax
Replaced an unconfirmed hedge with the confirmed out-of-state active-duty pay exclusion: up to $50,000/year for 120+ consecutive days of active duty performed outside Louisiana (R.S. 47:293(9)(e)). (official source) - Aug 22 · Louisiana · education
Filled three missing Title 29 eligibility gaps: the dependent-child age floor (16, not just the 25 ceiling), the surviving spouse's 10-year use-it window and remarriage bar, and the veteran's own Louisiana residency requirement (entirely absent previously). (official source) - Aug 22 · Louisiana · employment & hiring
Added the 'un-remarried' qualifier for a surviving spouse's civil-service exam preference eligibility. (official source) - Aug 22 · Alaska · vehicles & recreation
Corrected a factual error: Alaska does have one toll facility (the Whittier Tunnel); it carries no veteran/disability discount so the practical 'no toll benefit' conclusion is unchanged, but the prior 'no toll roads or bridges at all' premise was wrong. (official source) - Aug 22 · Alaska · health & veterans homes
Corrected the Palmer Veterans' and Pioneers' Home admission age from an unconfirmed '65+' to the primary-sourced '60+ years of age' (plus one year continuous Alaska residency). (official source) - Aug 19 · Vermont · income tax
Corrected the 'claim only one retirement exemption' rule: Vermont's Act 71 (2025) exempts military retirement/SBP as a separate exclusion from the Social Security/Civil Service Retirement System/Other Retirement System group, so it stacks on top of whichever of those a veteran also claims, effective tax year 2025. (official source) - Aug 19 · Vermont · vehicles & recreation
Added a previously-missing benefit: Vermont sets aside up to 10% of annual moose permits (capped at 6) in a priority drawing for any resident veteran with active-duty service and a non-dishonorable discharge, regardless of disability rating. (official source) - Aug 19 · Utah · education
Corrected the Purple Heart graduate tuition waiver: S.B. 220 (2026, effective 5/6/2026) raised the graduate-level cap from $10,000 to $15,000 and repealed the prior 10-year-from-undergraduate-completion application deadline; the statute was also renumbered to Utah Code 53H-11-303. Undergraduate tuition remains full and uncapped. (official source) - Aug 19 · Utah · vehicles & recreation
Sharpened the Purple Heart plate fee-waiver scope: Utah's own DMV plate classification and Part 16's statutory definition list both indicate a Purple Heart plate is an Honor (Part 4) plate, not a Part 16 Sponsored Special Group plate, so a plate issued today most likely does not reach the broader post-2023 fee bundle beyond the base plate-fee exemption. (official source) - Aug 19 · Utah · property tax
Added a caution that some counties' own public-facing instructions (e.g. Duchesne County) haven't caught up to H.B. 124's 2026 switch to one-time filing and still tell applicants to refile annually. (official source) - Aug 18 · Tennessee · vehicles & recreation
Added three previously-missing vehicle tax breaks: the first Disabled Veteran plate is free for a 100% P&T veteran or specific lower-rating disabilities (Tenn. Code Ann. 55-4-256); a VA-grant vehicle gets its own county motor-vehicle-privilege-tax exemption (5-8-102(d)(6)); and adaptive equipment plus a VA-grant vehicle purchase are exempt from sales/use tax (67-6-353). (official source) - Aug 18 · Tennessee · other benefits
Softened the state veterans' cemetery dependent-burial-fee claim from an unqualified 'no cost' to a flagged conflict (a TDVS-sourced citation elsewhere states $700), pending direct primary-source confirmation. (official source) - Aug 18 · South Dakota · property tax
Added two 2026 laws strengthening the missed-deadline safety net: HB1193 requires counties to retroactively abate/refund (up to 4 years) a veteran's $200,000 exemption once a pending VA permanent-and-total claim is approved, and SB12 lets veterans petition for a discretionary refund if they missed the paraplegic-exemption or owner-occupied-classification deadline. (official source) - Aug 18 · South Dakota · health & veterans homes
Corrected the State Veterans Home admission criteria: current law and the Home's own application process key eligibility to VA per-diem payment eligibility, with no separate income test — a previously cited ~$1,000-above-VA-Improved-Pension-rate income limit is stale and not part of current admission criteria. (official source) - Aug 18 · South Carolina · other benefits
Added the newly enacted South Carolina Safeguarding American Veterans' Benefits Act (Act No. 211/S.695, effective 5/19/2026), which bans upfront fees and outcome guarantees by paid veterans'-claims consultants and caps any contingency fee at the lesser of 5x the monthly benefit increase or $12,500. (official source) - Aug 17 · Rhode Island · property tax
Corrected the Gold Star parents' exemption per-town dollar examples, which had been conflated with unrelated exemption categories (base-wartime and full-SAH figures): corrected to the state's own per-town report figures (Cumberland $25,377, Westerly $43,068, Narragansett $20,000). (official source) - Aug 17 · Rhode Island · income tax
Affirmatively confirmed (previously an open hedge) that a surviving spouse receiving Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuity payments qualifies for the same military-retirement income-tax modification. (official source) - Aug 17 · Rhode Island · vehicles & recreation
Added detail to the State Parks disability pass: it requires annual renewal (unless VA re-evaluation is waived) and corrected State Parks Headquarters' seasonal office hours. (official source) - Aug 17 · Puerto Rico · property tax
Corrected the property-tax page's temporary-elevation history: the Route 1 ($5,000) veteran exemption was never itself elevated (that was a separate, non-veteran general homestead exemption raised to $150,000); the Route 2 ($50,000-to-$500,000) elevation ran only FY2009-10 through 2011-12 (three years), not through 2018-19, per CRIM's own AS-38 form. (official source) - Aug 17 · Puerto Rico · health & veterans homes
Added a previously-missing Casa del Veterano rental-subsidy benefit (Ley 313-2000 as amended by Ley 146-2024): up to $600/mo domiciliary or $800/mo nursing care, income-scaled and regulation-set (not a fixed statutory amount). (official source) - Aug 17 · Puerto Rico · health & veterans homes
Corrected the Atlantic Garden Veterans Cemetery (Aguadilla) address from Carr. 110 Km 29.8 to the correct Carr. 110 Km 6.6, Bo. Montana, per OPV's own page; and added a newly enacted law (Ley 145-2026) requiring government housing/property notices to disclose the veteran preference. (official source) - Aug 17 · Oregon · education
Added a previously-missing state-law tuition waiver (ORS 350.285) for spouses/children of veterans who died on active duty, died of a service-connected disability, or are certified 100% disabled, and for children of Purple Heart recipients - covers up to 180 credits/6 terms at Oregon public universities and OHSU, and stacks with federal DEA benefits. (official source) - Aug 17 · Oregon · vehicles & recreation
Added two minor completions: a VA Summary of Benefits Letter now counts alongside a DD-214 as proof of veteran status for the recognition-plate program (HB 2559, 2025), and resident disabled veterans can buy a reduced-price ($29) elk tag through ODFW. (official source) - Aug 16 · Utah · vehicles & recreation
Corrected the Purple Heart plate fee-waiver scope: Utah Code 41-1a-1211(12) gives any Purple Heart recipient an undated exemption from the base license-plate fee regardless of when the plate was issued; the broader exemption (special-group fee, registration, driver-ed, uninsured-motorist, county corridor fees) is confirmed under 41-1a-1211(10)(b) but limited to plates issued on/before 12/31/2023 or under the Part 16 Sponsored Special Group program, and whether today's Purple Heart plates fall under Part 16 remains unconfirmed. (official source) - Aug 16 · Ohio · education
Updated the War Orphans & Severely Disabled Veterans' Children Scholarship (WOS) to the newly-approved AY2026-2027 funding levels: private-institution flat award rose from $6,330 to $6,397 (public-institution rate stays 77% of tuition/fees). (official source) - Aug 16 · North Dakota · vehicles & recreation
Removed a stale caution that ND Game and Fish's own licensing page still showed the old 100% disability threshold for the combined hunting license; the agency page has since been corrected to the current 50%-or-greater threshold, matching our page and the 2025 law (HB1147). (official source) - Aug 15 · New Mexico · income tax
Corrected a stale claim that the $30,000 military-retirement income-tax exclusion expires after tax year 2026; a 2024 law (Ch.67, Laws of 2024 / HB252) removed the sunset and extended eligibility to surviving spouses, effective for tax years beginning on/after 1/1/2025 - the exclusion is now ongoing, not set to lapse. (official source) - Aug 15 · New Jersey · vehicles & recreation
Corrected mis-cited state park admission benefit: general free entry requires being 62+, totally disabled, or an active NJ Guard member with completed IADT (not any-degree VA rating alone); the any-degree standard applies only to the beach-vehicle-permit fee (13:1L-12), not the statute previously cited (13:1L-12.1, which actually covers veterans'-organization events and Gold Star Family ID holders). (official source) - Aug 15 · Nevada · vehicles & recreation
Corrected Disabled Veteran plate eligibility: NRS 482.0962 requires a 100% combined VA rating OR a lower rating that independently meets NRS 482.384's mobility/medical criteria (certified by a licensed medical professional) - not any VA-rated disability as the page and compare-JSON previously implied. (official source) - Aug 15 · Nevada · education
Corrected a hedge implying a living NV Guard member's tuition waiver could be transferred to a spouse/child; NSHE's actual family fee waiver is death-triggered only (Guard member killed on duty), same 10-year window as the POW/MIA family waiver. (official source) - Aug 14 · Nebraska · vehicles & recreation
Added that a denied disabled-veteran motor-vehicle tax exemption applicant can appeal to their county board of equalization within 20 days (Neb. Rev. Stat. 60-3,189(1)) — Sarpy County used this route to reverse all of its first-year deadline denials on 7/7/2026. (official source) - Aug 14 · Montana · property tax
Added the honorably-discharged and 7-months-primary-residence qualifiers to the MDV property-tax exemption's eligibility list on the page (already correctly modeled in the calculator dataset, just missing from the HTML text) — sourced to MCA 15-6-301/15-6-311. (official source) - Aug 14 · Missouri · employment & hiring
Corrected the sourcing for Missouri's 5/10-point veterans' hiring preference — the figures live on the state employment application (Form MO 300-0739), not in RSMo 36.220 as previously cited; the statute itself only sets a tie-breaker and training-credit preference. (official source) - Aug 14 · Mississippi · other benefits
Corrected the Mississippi VA headquarters street address (War Memorial Building, 120 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39201) — the page had a stale/wrong address (660 North Street). (official source) - Aug 14 · Mississippi · other benefits
Added the newly enacted SAVE Act of 2026 (HB1076/Ch.453, eff. 7/1/2026), which bans referral fees, upfront fees, and outcome guarantees by paid veterans'-benefits consultants and caps contingent fees at 5x the monthly benefit increase secured. (official source) - Aug 14 · California · income tax
Refreshed SB1407's status on the page — remained under submission at its 8/13/2026 Assembly Appropriations suspense-file hearing (not yet disposed); no dollar-figure change ($40,000 cap TY2026-2036 already correct). (official source) - Aug 13 · Connecticut · other benefits
Pinned the exact statutory vehicle for the free veteran bus pass to Public Act 26-68 (SB1, the FY2027 budget act signed 5/26/2026) — previously the page described the benefit but the underlying bill (SB-237) had been confirmed dead with no PA number; the budget-bill vehicle's own PA number is now cited directly. (official source) - Aug 12 · Kansas · vehicles & recreation
Added that a surviving spouse who was already receiving the 100% P&T/TDIU sales-tax exemption may keep using it until remarriage, per KDOR's own exemption page (previously only stated for the K-40SVR property-tax refund). (official source) - Aug 12 · Indiana · property tax
Added a third surviving-spouse qualifying door to the new $250 property-tax credit: spouses of veterans who died while serving on inactive duty training now also qualify, per the Indiana DVA's own current page (previously the page listed only killed-in-action or died-on-active-duty). (official source) - Aug 11 · Utah · vehicles & recreation
Tightened the Purple Heart plate fee-waiver description to the statutorily-confirmed fees (plate issuance + special-group fee under Utah Code 41-1a-1211(11)(b)); flagged the broader fee-waiver claim as unconfirmed pending direct statute verification. (official source) - Aug 11 · Maryland · health & veterans homes
The Maryland Veterans Trust Fund reopened Aug 1, 2026 after a pause and now runs on a normal monthly (1st-15th) application cycle. (official source) - Aug 11 · Maryland · employment & hiring
Added the Military Personnel & Veteran-Owned Small Business Loan Program (MPVOLP): no-interest loans $1,000-$100,000 for veteran-owned small businesses, on an application-window cycle. (official source) - Aug 11 · Louisiana · health & veterans homes
New law (Act 558/HB609) exempts a veteran from medical-records fees when requesting records to support a VA or LDVA disability claim, once per veteran, effective Aug 1, 2026. (official source) - Aug 11 · Hawaii · property tax
Confirmed Hawaii County's annual minimum property tax at $200/year (previously unconfirmed on the page, with conflicting $100-$300 secondary-source claims), per the county's own rates page. (official source) - Aug 11 · Connecticut · vehicles & recreation
CT DVA now provides veterans a free bus pass, funded starting FY2027 (July 2026). (official source) - Aug 10 · District of Columbia · employment & hiring
Confirmed via DSLBD's own CBE Certification Document Checklist that the DSLBD Veteran-Owned Business Enterprise (VOB) subcategory requires a DD Form 214 as proof of veteran status; added to the page and sources (previously only sourced from a secondary aggregator). (official source) - Aug 10 · California · income tax
Refreshed SB1407's (military retirement pay exclusion cap increase) procedural status on the page -- placed on the Assembly Appropriations suspense file 8/5/2026, hearing set 8/13/2026 -- still not enacted, dollar figures unchanged. (official source) - Aug 5 · Wisconsin · employment & hiring
Corrected a stale claim that WI adds 10-20 civil-service preference points by disability rating; that numeric table was repealed by 2015 Act 150 and replaced by an equal-qualifications tiebreaker plus guaranteed promotional-register certification for 70%+ disabled veterans. (official source) - Aug 5 · Wisconsin · health & veterans homes
Added the actual federal citation (38 CFR 51.41) for the rule that a 70%+ (or IU) veteran's state-veterans-home nursing care is paid in full by the VA with no separate charge, replacing an uncited hedge. (official source) - Aug 5 · West Virginia · property tax
TSD-455 guidance PDF confirmed reprinted January 2026 but still carries the pre-SB194 stale 90-100% P&T standard; page note sharpened to flag the cosmetic-only reprint. (official source) - Aug 5 · Alabama · health & veterans homes
Adkins State Veterans Home reopening (9/13/2026) confirmed on track with full bed-count detail (174 beds, 28 memory-care); noted ADVA's own site is stale and does not reflect the fire/reopening. (official source) - Aug 4 · Washington · property tax
Clarified that Washington's 2027+ veteran/senior/disabled property-tax relief CDI deduction options are mutually exclusive: the $7,500 (+$7,500 spouse) standard deduction replaces itemizing medical expenses, while the $6,000/year room-rental-income deduction is only available if itemizing -- per DOR's own Q&A, an applicant cannot claim both in the same year. Page and JSON previously read as if both could be combined. (official source) - Aug 3 · Maryland · vehicles & recreation
Corrected the vehicle-registration section: Maryland Transportation Art. §13-903 provides a real registration-FEE exemption (not just a free plate) for veterans VA-classified as having lost use of a hand/arm/leg, as totally disabled, or with a specific vision impairment - the prior page said registration fees were owed in all cases pending confirmation, and the compare-table detail overstated it as a blanket 100%-rating rule. (official source)
